Hale Aquatic Centre Wembley

The Hale Aquatic Centre project consisted of the construction of two open air pools which were heated by a new geothermal system, the drilling contract for this element was not part of the construction contract, however all equipment and interfaces to ensure system integration, were included in the contract works.

The new facility was situated on the existing site of the school’s basket ball courts which were removed to allow reduced level excavation and remediation measures to be undertaken.

The construction method was originally concrete for balance tanks and pool structures, but during development of the scheme the option for Myrtha stainless steel panel pool installation was adopted and the contract was placed on this basis, whilst the balance tanks remained in concrete.

In situ concrete terrace seating, structural steel support for rigid membrane solar shading, lighting for evening pool use, and new and revised drainage systems were also incorporated within the works.

A new pool/geothermal plant room and equipment store were constructed on a split level site adjacent to the new pool, incorporating in-situ concrete works, traditional brick facade, timber roof with clay tiled finish, roller shutter access doors and associated louvres for plant and equipment.

Two new changing facilities were also incorporated within the scheme. Firstly, stand alone changing for home and visiting students were positioned to the West of the site and these catered for pool use and also team sports played in other locations on the campus. These were traditional brick facade, colour bond roof coverings, fully tiled walls and floors, change area seating hanging rails and shelving, toilet and shower cubicles.

The second changing facility allows for staff changing and incorporates the pool operator’s office. Again this utilizes traditional brick, tiled roof construction method allied with the standard changing room fit out criteria listed above.

Substantial external works were undertaken, including a new basket ball court, new pool fencing gates and handrails, new fencing to the adjacent tennis courts, three new car parking areas adjacent to plant room and changing facilities.

The project was successfully completed within a live school environment to the satisfaction of the client, safely, on time and on budget.

“Up there with the best.” Fiore Giovannangelo – Director of Operations Hale School
