PS Structures was engaged in early 2011 to construct the multi purpose Leisure and Community Centre (now known as the Cannington Leisureplex) for the City of Canning. The project consisted of a 2 court sports hall, gymnasium with ablution facilities, 25m lap pool, leisure pool with beach entry, water slide and external water play park, spa and sauna, library, function and meeting rooms, administration block, a crèche and a cafe. The externals were a combination of landscaping and parking.
The project consisted of a large number of tilt-up panels, some of which were feature panels. The other cladding materials were zinc cladding and Trespa cladding. The challenges that the project team had to overcome consisted of the sequencing and locations for casting tilt-up panels, the large spans of structural steel trusses over the swimming pools and sports hall.
High voltage cables had to be relocated due to them being too close the to the second floor of the function building. The gymnasium was a curved building which required precise workmanship with the zinc cladding. PS Structures completed the project to the satisfaction of the architect and client.
The Sports Hall Consisted of a Tasmanian Oak Gunns Sprung timber floor laid with appropriate expansion joints and vapour barrier to ensure the longevity of the timber floor, the basketball back boards where installed using a motorised pulley system to enable the boards to be raised and lowered at the clients leisure creating flexibility of the courts to be used as either basketball, volleyball, net ball, babmington or volleyball.
The gymnasium was split in to 2 sections, the free weight section which was laid out on rubber flooring and the cardio machines which were installed on a raised timber floor finished with American oak Polyflor Plank vinyl flooring. The free weight section had a raked acoustic rippletone ceiling installed above all the free weights for acoustic and aesthetic reasons.
The Leisureplex consisted of 2 pools, one leisure pool with two parts, one part being a 25m walking or aerobics and the other part a leisure bathing pool. The other pool was a 25m lap pool. They were constructed out of a reinforced concrete shell. The pool, hall ceilings consisted of a full vapour barrier versilux ceiling with Acoustic corruline ceiling panels inset to control the noise within the pool hall and aesthetical appearance.
The services for the building are of a high tech nature, particularly the mechanical system as the heat generated from the Air Conditioning is used to heat the pools making the building very efficient to run. This reduces the amount of time the geothermal bore or gas boiler needs to run. The project also consisted of a grey water treatment unit used to provide treated water to the toilets for flushing and irrigation.
